Looking to live in the mountains of Floyd County VA? Joey and Laken Craighead, high school sweethearts, custom built their log home at 1801 Macks Mountain Rd in Indian Valley, Virginia in 2016. This home is nestled on approximately 77 acres of rural countryside. Roy Quesenberry from Dugspur helped the owners dig the basement and septic system. Joey talked highly of his work and commitment to get the job done. The basement is a full finished basement approximately 1600 square feet. Joey and Laken installed the floor system themselves an oversaw every step and process to building their home. They were happy to share with me the process as well as the specific details of the home.
The kitchen, laundry and main bathroom floors are black granite of which Joey hauled himself from Roanoke. Even though he underestimated the weight he was dedicated to ensure the home was completed efficiently. The counters in the kitchen are made from locally sourced black walnut. The wood floors are Canadian maple of which Joey shared grows slower and is a hardier maple than what is sourced in the United States, which makes this a great wood floor for children.
A unique feature of the basement is the pallet lumber ceiling. Joey shared roughly 200 pallets were disassembled, by him, to use for the ceiling. The heating and air system used in the home is from Florida, of which is a designer mini split system by LG. Each room is climate controlled separately. Joey and Laken made decisions based on not needing maintenance often. Such as the semi-wrap around deck is made of composite decking and has a lifetime color fade warranty. The roof shingles are from Johnson City Tennessee and carry a lifetime color fade warranty. Even the mulch they chose is made from rubber tires and will never need replacement.
This home was built by family! Not just Joey and Laken but their extended family. They were involved with each building step, not just the cosmetics, but lifting the beams, etc. This is a well-built home built by family with love.
